The current quarantine due to COVID-19 is a time of uncertainty and upheaval for many families, as is the re-opening of our Finger Lakes Region. It’s natural to worry whether your kids are having their basic needs fulfilled.

We at The Gymnastics Training Center are working hard to redesign our facility, the way our classes are taught and even how students arrive and exit our facility, so that when given the green-light to re-open, we know that we are doing it in the safest way possible.   As we are still waiting for the go-ahead to see children back in the gym, we encourage families to find different ways to encourage activity and exercise from inside your home.  It will help lessen the pent up energy, have a safer transition back to full activity and it’s not impossible with the right tips and tricks.

4 Tips For Promoting Exercise & Health During Quarantine

1. Do More Chores

Spending time indoors is a great opportunity to deep clean your home. Common household chores like vacuuming and sweeping can burn calories and tone muscles. Cleaning out your basement or attic could also be a beneficial activity. Spend time sorting through old items; you may be surprised and entertained by what you find.

The constant movement of cleaning will help keep kids from being sedentary for too long. Figure out what chores would be appropriate for your child’s age and ability and create a game or reward system to keep them engaged while cleaning.

2. Get Outside

Spend time outside while still adhering to your state or city’s social distancing guidelines. Encourage kids to play outside, run around, and blow off steam, while still staying safe in their own backyard. Consider taking family walks, bike rides, or hikes in nearby woods or parks, provided you can avoid crowds.

3. Organize Indoor Activities

Makeexercise the most of your time indoors. Create an obstacle course using pillows, chairs, and other items. Put together a playlist of fun, high-energy music for a family dance party. You can also use online tutorial videos of gymnastics, ballet or other exercises to do together.  Do remember to watch it through first to make sure that the activities are appropriate for your space, availability of equipment and your child’s capabilities.

4. Empathize

Recognize that this is a strange and difficult time for your kids as much as it is for you. If they’re stressed, anxious, or sad, take time to validate those feelings and talk them through. Let them know they’re not alone. Kids may not feel motivated to stay physically healthy if their mental or emotional health isn’t addressed as well.
