Security is often the last thing on the minds of new homeowners who are just moving in. However, a new home may have risks you’re unaware of, such as spare keys sitting in a neighbor’s drawer, loose windows, and local crime rates that are higher than expected. Along with installing a state-of-the-art home security system from CenturyLink® Security, there are a few important steps to take that will protect your family and the new property.

How to secure your new home

1. Change the locks

When you purchase a home, you simply have no way of knowing who else has keys to the property. In fact, the previous homeowners may not even know, so it’s best to ensure any keys floating around will no longer work.

As soon as you move in, change the locks on all exterior doors, including the front and back entrances. If your home has a basement or detached garage, be sure to change those locks or passcodes as well.

2. Carefully inspect the windows

Windows are some of the most vulnerable parts of the house and a feature many homeowners don’t check before making an offer. Old, worn-out locks or loose frames create opportunities for burglars and other criminals.

As soon as you move in, carefully examine every window from the inside and outside. Repairing rotted wood and replacing outdated locks will make these entry points more difficult to use. When installing a security system, be sure to obtain window sensors and place them on the most vulnerable frames.

3. Clean up the landscaping

Trees and bushes growing close to the house create dark areas that can provide cover for potential intruders. If the previous owner didn’t trim back shrubbery before putting the house on the market, clean up the landscaping to create clear lines of sight.

Installing outdoor lights as part of your home security system can also make your home less attractive to intruders. For maximum protection, install a system with motion detectors that trigger floodlights whenever anyone approaches your house.
