Summer is the perfect time to install an above-ground pool so that your family has a fun way to cool off. One of the keys to a successful installation is using sand to create a base. However, it’s not as easy as simply dumping some in your yard. Here's how to pour and arrange it to ensure your pool has a solid foundation.

What Supplies Do You Need for the Installation?

Besides the above-ground pool itself, you’ll need to gather the right materials for creating the base. Choose masonry sand free from rocks, gravel, or debris; its texture is fine enough to make the base smooth, level, and comfortable to walk on.

How much you’ll need will vary depending on the size of the pool. Let your supplier know the measurements so that they can recommend the right amount. If your pool includes a liner, foam cove, and wall foam, get duct tape or spray glue as well.

What Are the Installation Steps?

Pour out a bed of sand about three inches thick. Spread it enough to support the pool and create a small border around it. To keep it level and firm so that the pool doesn’t slide around, you’ll need to pack the sand down, which is easy to do by driving over it with a vehicle or similarly heavy piece of equipment.

After the layer has been spread, you can place the pool onto the bed. Make a cove by adding another four inches of sand or foam material at an angle around the edge and against the pool’s wall to support its weight once it’s filled. From there, stick the pool’s vinyl liner inside. You can also add a wall made of foam for extra protection and softness, attaching it from the top to the bottom with duct tape or glue spray.
