Social security disability (SSD) is a federal program designed to provide an income for people who are physically or mentally unable to work. Receiving these benefits isn’t always a simple process, and there are many reasons why your application could be denied. Only a third of claims are approved, but after reconsideration, many are ultimately rewarded. Here are some reasons why your claim could be denied initially.

Why Might a Social Security Disability Claim Be Rejected?

1. High Income

The Social Security Administration (SSA) enforces income limits for people applying for SSD, known as substantial gainful activity (SGA). If your income exceeds this limit, which is $1,310 for non-blind people and $2,190 for blind people in 2021, the SSA believes that you can sufficiently earn an income without benefits.

2. Refusal to Follow Doctors’ Orders

If your doctor advises treatments to help you recover from your injury or control symptoms, you must follow them to qualify for SSD. For instance, if they prescribe physical therapy, and you can’t prove that you attended sessions, your claim may be dismissed.

3. Failure to Prove the Condition

Your medical records must prove that your injury prevents you from working. Therefore, the SSA must have access to your medical records, including any imaging reports and notes from your doctor. If the SSA requests access to records, and you don’t respond, your claim will be denied.

4. Inability to Be Reached

The SSA may need to reach you for more information, so make sure you’re available by phone and mail. For instance, if you’ve recently moved, let them know so they can contact you at your new address. If they’re unable to contact you, your claim may be denied automatically.

5. Non-Eligible Disability

If a disability is temporary or doesn’t meet the SSA’s standards, it could mean that you’ll be refused benefits. Aside from blindness, a disability must last for a year or longer. Injuries that are likely to heal in a shorter period (such as bone fractures) won’t qualify for benefits unless they cause extended impairment.
