Window tinting keeps your home comfortable on warm summer days, enhances your privacy, and can even lower your AC bills. However, tinted windows do require a little extra care and attention when it’s time to wipe away smudges and dirt. Here are a few steps to follow and common mistakes to avoid when cleaning your tinted windows.

Do:

Use soft, lint-free cleaning cloths.

Abrasive paper towels, scouring pads, and other rough materials can easily damage window film. Using them will not only make your window tinting less effective but also leave behind marks that usually can’t be fixed. Instead, use separate clean, lint-free cloths for washing and drying your windows.

Dry with a squeegee.

The flexible rubber edge of a squeegee is perfect for drying off tinted windows. To give your windows a streak-free shine, start from the top and pull the squeegee downward. Use a paper towel or cloth to wipe moisture from the rubber blade between each stroke.

Don’t:

Use ammonia-based cleaning products.

Most window tinting films contain layers of metal, which don’t respond well to ammonia. Ammonia-based cleaning products can cause permanent discoloration and fade the film, giving your windows a blotchy appearance. Read the labels of any cleaning products before using them on your windows, or make your own using warm water and a few drops of mild detergent.

Clean your windows too soon.

Cleaning your windows before they’re fully cured can cause bubbles to form under the film and may take years off its useful life span. Some window tinting products cure in a couple of days, while others require a week or more. Your installation professional will let you know how long to wait according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
