Advice on Where You Should Plant Food Plots
Planting food plots has many benefits, from helping the wildlife to increasing deer numbers for hunting. Yet, choosing the best location to plant your seeds is often the hardest part. Thankfully, the feed store experts Gregg Farm Services in Gassville, AR, are here to help explain where you should be planting your food plot. Here, they’ve put together a quick guide to point you in the right direction.
Hunting 101: Where You Should Plant Your Food Plot
Find an Open Field
The first thing you should do when planning a food plot is find a great field. Typically, old and open fields are best, as they will provide a great line of sight and plenty of room for growth. If the area you’re considering has plenty of weeds, then you can feel confident that the seeds will be able to grow. If the location only has sparse vegetation, on the other hand, your food may not grow well and would then be less effective. In this case, it’s best to find another location.
Consider Yourself
Once you feel confident the food will grow well in a particular spot, consider where you will be. You’ll want to make sure the surrounding area contains at least one large tree that will hide you well. If it’s big enough to place a tree stand, you can be confident that the location will work for you.
Check the Dirt
Finally, check the soil where you plan to grow your seeds. Dig 3 to 4 inches into the soil and take a few samples. In general, sending these samples to your county extension office for analysis can help make sure your soil is good to go. For convenience, you can drop your sample at Gregg Farm Services and we’ll get it to the extension office. We will help you interpret the results and provide the necessary fertilizer. While this step feels time-consuming and inconvenient, it will help to ensure you have chosen a great location for your food plot.
There is a wide variety of plot seeds and mixes. Luckily, the staff at Gregg Farm Services are capable of providing any advice! If you have further questions about your food plot or even about weed control, feel free to give them a call at (870) 481 5165.
