Creating a beautiful yard depends on many different factors, including your climate, location, and soil. Bermuda and fescue are two common grass varieties for lawns, each with their own benefits. However, if you’re planning on adding grass to any area of your property, you’ll need to make sure you have the variety that will best suit your needs, along with the proper lawn equipment. Here’s a guide to help you make an informed decision.

Bermuda

Bermuda is a coarse, dark-green grass commonly seen in sporting areas, such as ball fields and golf courses. This high-quality variety is highly adaptive and tolerates heat and drought well. In fact, Bermuda grows best during warm weather, when the temperature hovers between 75 and 95 degrees. It’s known to resist pests and reaches a maximum growth of approximately 2 inches.

Since it thrives in the summer, Bermuda performs best when planted in late spring. You’ll need certain lawn equipment to ensure the grass seeds take root, including a rake to prepare the grass, spreader to sow seeds, and tamper or roller to firm the soil. Thereafter, the area should be watered three to four times daily with an eight of an inch of water until the lawn becomes established.

Fescue

While Bermuda turns brown during cooler water and remains dormant from the fall through the early spring, fescue thrives in cooler temperatures. It grows best when the weather is between 55 and 75 degrees, but it is more prone to insect damage and disease when growth is slower during the summer. Fescue resembles Bermuda in that it has a deep green color. However, it can soar to heights of 4 feet without mowing. Homeowners are drawn to fescue for its quick establishment, shade tolerance, and ability to withstand considerable wear and tear.

Since fescue excels in cooler temperatures, it can be planted in either the spring or the fall. As with Bermuda, you’ll need the right lawn equipment to plant fescue seeds successfully. Use a rake to level the soil, and then sow seeds with a spreader. Rake an additional quarter of an inch of soil over the seeds once planted. Water the lawn several times per day until growth is established, up to 21 days.
