1. Do Not Disturb 

Weeds only get enough light to grow when they reach the topsoil. Excessive digging only brings dormant seeds to the surface so they can bloom. Avoid germination by digging only when absolutely necessary. Once you’re done, be sure to cover the spot either with mulch or a new plant. You can also work at removing weeds by slicing through the roots with your trowel rather than digging them up. 

2. Apply Mulch

Mulch is a gardener’s best friend. It helps the soil retain water. Organic varieties are beneficial to many pollinating insects. Best of all, it suppresses weed germination by shielding seeds from sunlight. Layers of mulch should be about two to three inches deep, but over time it can erode. Replenish your cover frequently for effective weed control in your garden. 

3. Pull Weeds After Rain 

Wet soil is easier to work with. Dry, rough soil holds onto the roots of weeds, making it more difficult to pull them out completely. After a good rain, break out your gloves and trowel and head out to the garden for removal. 

4. Be Cautious With the Mower

Running the lawnmower over mature weeds will only spread seeds and increase germination. If the lawn or garden is so infested with weeds it’d take a month to pull them all, use a grass catcher on your mower to filter them out and keep them from spreading around your garden. Once your grass catcher is full, destroy or dump the trimmings. Don’t put mowed weeds in the compost pile. The seeds can germinate and grow there, and ultimately return to your lawn once you spread this homemade fertilizer over your garden bed.
