If your family is taking a trip to a snowy area this winter, one fun activity to try is sledding. Whether you’re on a farm rental or at a vacation house, sledding is an activity the entire family can enjoy together. You can have fun and stay safe by following these three tips.

How to Stay Safe While Sledding

1. Use the Right Equipment

If you’re sledding with young children at your farm rental or vacation home, you’ll want to avoid the round, saucer type sleds. These sleds pick up speed fast and are almost impossible to control. Instead, opt for a steerable wooden sled for kids.

Everyone should be dressed in warm clothing. Multiple layers of clothing along with thick gloves, scarves, and a hat are recommended. If a child gets their clothing wet, make sure they come in and dry off before heading back out.

2. Choose a Safe Spot

Farm RentalWhen choosing a spot for sledding, make sure that it is far away from any roadways. If you’re at a farm rental, avoiding roadways shouldn’t be an issue. However, you’ll also want to steer clear of ponds, driveways, and deep banks of snow.

If you’re sledding with children, choose a hill that isn’t too steep or rocky. Also, avoid icy surfaces as it’s impossible to steer on ice.

3. Teach Kids the Basics of Sledding Safety

While sledding is a fun winter activity, it can also be dangerous. Teach kids how to roll off their sleds in the event they lose control or are heading into a bank or other hazardous area. Also, advise kids not to stand in the path of others who are sledding.
