Northern Georgia is abundant with breathtaking scenery, off-the-beaten-path gems, and activities that allow you to experience nature in an intimate way. Many of these attractions are also appropriate for children of all ages. If you’re planning an outdoorsy family vacation, these are some places you should swing by.

A Guide to Family-Friendly Places in Northern Georgia

1. Appalachian Trail

With more than 76 miles of the Appalachian Trail passing through Georgia, this is one of the best ways to experience the state’s diverse ecosystems. The National Scenic Trail is one of the most prominent hikes in the entire country, with the southernmost tip of the Trail residing in Springer Mountain. From there, your family can explore the state’s bucolic terrains, valleys, and mountain summits.

2. Tallulah Gorge State Park

family vacationSpanning 2,689 acres, this state park surrounds the main attraction, a two-mile-long gash naturally created by the Tallulah River. Around Tallulah Gorge are six active waterfalls that can be explored by various trails or a suspension bridge 80 feet above ground. You can also immerse yourself in the park’s trails by taking a scenic walk, hike, or bike ride to several scenic overlooks.

3. Tiger Drive-In

Catch a flick under the stars with your family at this throwback to the good old days. While this retro drive-in is one of five in the entire state, it’s the only one with scenic mountain views. Along with screening first-run movies, Tiger also hosts Hot Rod Nights for car buffs to show off their vintage rides.

4. Chattooga River

Active parents and older children will want to hit the open waters and try some whitewater rafting down the free-flowing Chattooga River. The designated Wild and Scenic River Corridor hosts rafting tours for all levels, from beginners who like to float in calm waters to extreme trips for adventure seekers. If you prefer seeing the sights from above, you can also sign up for a zipline canopy tour.
