Building a new house is exciting since it allows you to design the home of your dreams and watch as it’s constructed from the ground up. However, new home construction isn’t an overnight process, so homeowners prefer to have a building timeline to know when to expect their house’s completion. While much depends on the weather, construction materials, and hard-to-factor errors, there’s a general itinerary that new home constructions should follow.

The 5 Steps of Building a House

1. Taking Preliminary Measures

Proper preliminary steps lay the groundwork—both literally and figuratively—for your new home. These steps are laying out the plans with your contractors, purchasing land that meets your needs and budget, and obtaining building permits. Additionally, you should account—logistically and financially—for expenses like septic systems, electrical lines, and internet hookups.

2. Preparing the Site

The intensive work begins with the site being marked off. Then the excavating and hauling equipment is brought in to start moving earth and carve out the foundation of your home. Finally, the parameters of the building will be mapped out with stakes so the builders can pinpoint the exact spots to start construction.

3. Laying the Foundation

These are called footers, and once they've been installed and inspected, they’re topped with concrete slabs. Your contractors will then construct the house’s wood frame, outlining where the rest of the structure will be built.

4. Installing the Internal Components

Your house’s internal components are put in after the frame passes inspection, and the exterior—windows, plywood, wraps, and sealants—is completed. The interior is made of systems that make the home livable and comfortable: heating, cooling, electrical, plumbing, and decorative fixtures. After the insulation and drywall go in, the interior starts to look more like a house.

5. Applying the Finishing Touches

All that's left is to add those finishing touches that are essential to the house’s character. This is the stage in which you put in floors, interior doors, cupboards, paint, and appliances. You also get to choose those little touches of charm such as trim, molding, baseboards, and light fixtures.
