An HVAC unit's air handler is a set of components, including the filter, evaporator coil, and blower motor, that cool air to the thermostat temperatures and circulate it into rooms. Problems with these parts may cause your cooling and heating system to malfunction, potentially compromising comfort. Here are some common air handler problems and how to correct them.

A Guide to Common Air Handler Issues

1. Poor Circulation of Air

The air handler uses a blower motor to pull air into the system and push conditioned air through vents. If you notice low or no airflow from registers and dampers, this may occur when the motor malfunctions, often as a result of issues with the capacitor, relay, or control board. An HVAC technician can repair these parts to restore the motor's function and increase air circulation through your space.

2. Reduced Air Quality

As intake air enters the handler, it moves through a filter, which traps dirt, dust, and pet dander. If you notice musty odors or experience breathing issues, this may occur when the filter becomes saturated with debris, causing particulate matter and allergens to recirculate through your space.

You can keep air fresh and facilitate easy breathing by replacing the filter monthly. If problems persist, an HVAC contractor may need to clean debris accumulations on the handler's inner components, such as the motor and coil.

3. Warm Airflow

If you set your HVAC system to cooling mode but it produces warm air, this could be due to the evaporator coil freezing. This component contains refrigerant, which cools the air. A clogged filter or blocked intake grille may prevent enough warm air from flowing over the coil, causing its internal temperature to drop below 32 degrees. When this occurs, the coil may freeze, keeping it from absorbing heat and causing warm air to blow out of your unit. A professional technician can thaw and clean the coil to promote proper cooling.

4. Unusual Noises

The blower motor typically makes a quiet humming noise you might hardly notice in your home. If you start hearing louder sounds, such as squealing or grinding, your blower motor may be dirty, have worn bearings, or be developing electrical problems that cause it to work harder to move air. A professional contractor can clean this part, replace the bearings, or swap out faulty wiring to take stress off the motor component and restore quiet operation.
