Typical electrical outlets have a life span of 10 years. However, improper installation, outdated technology, or accidental damage can result in various issues that make them non-functional or unsafe. Rather than going into the house wiring yourself, call a licensed electrician to replace the outlets if you notice the following.

When Should You Replace Your Outlets?

1. No Longer Working

If the outlet is no longer working, check your circuit breaker to make sure you didn't blow a fuse. Next, plug the appliance into a different outlet. If it still doesn't work, the machine may be to blame. Otherwise, have an electrician use a tester on the receptacle to determine electricity flow and perform the necessary fixes if there is none.

2. Burn Marks & Heat

If an outlet feels hot to the touch or has visible scorch marks around the plug, it has likely short-circuited. This often occurs due to damaged or improperly installed house wiring, damage to the wiring caused by nails or screws, or contact with water.

Even without an appliance actively plugged in and overheating, this issue could spark an electrical fire. To avoid this, turn off the power to this area of the house at the main breaker until the house wiring can be examined and repaired by a professional.

3. Plugs Fall Out

This is a relatively common problem that will occur over time as the outlet’s internal springs wear down. However, as plugs fall out, they could trigger electrical sparks that pose a shock and fire risk. Quite often, wiring and drywall around the outlet will also suffer damage because of this issue, requiring additional repairs. If your old outlets weren't Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), the electrical team will suggest an upgrade since these more advanced devices contain a sensor that will automatically cut off power to itself when overloaded.
