Ice dams are caused by poor ventilation or insulation of your roof. Rising heat melts snow at the peak, and once it flows down to the eaves, it will refreeze and form a ridge of heavy, snow-trapping ice. This can potentially damage your roof, gutter, and downspout. A roof repair specialist can address the underlying problem, but the temporary fixes below can help minimize the negative effect.

How to Deal With Ice Dams

1. Use a Rake

A long, extendable rake specifically designed for scraping snow and ice off your roof can be found at a hardware or home improvement store. An ice pick can also work, but you’ll have to climb a ladder to get much closer, which is potentially risky.

A rake allows you to stay firmly on the ground and manually scrape the ice and snow off the roof. Be careful not to damage the shingles while doing this to avoid needing roof repairs. Scraping will remove enough of the dam so that melted ice and snow can make its way to your gutter.

2. Apply a Chemical De-Icer

Many experts recommend filling a length of permeable material, such as pantyhose, with the substance and placing it inside the gutter. Remove the hose as soon as the ice has melted to avoid obstructing normal flow.

3. Lay Heated Cables

Heated cables can be laid in a zigzag pattern on your roof and through your gutters before snowfall begins. They will melt any snow that falls immediately, and direct the water to your drainage system.

Rather than getting up on the roof yourself to mount the cables, it may be best to have a professional do so for safety reasons. You’ll also need a GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet handy.
