Spondylolisthesis is a condition where a vertebra in the spine slips forward or backward, causing discomfort in the lower back. While spondylolisthesis can occur in any part of the back, it is most commonly experienced in the lumbar spine. If you are experiencing back pain, use this guide to spondylolisthesis to assess if it's time to contact a chiropractor for a visit.

Types of Spondylolisthesis

The six types of spondylolisthesis are traumatic, iatrogenic, congenital, degenerative, pathologic, and isthmic. The rarest form is congenital, otherwise known as dysplastic. This is an abnormality present at birth where there is a defect in the joints that connect to the spine. In contrast, isthmic spondylolisthesis is the most common form of this condition. A fracture or defect in the pars interarticularis, the bone that joins the facet joints of the spine, prevents the affected vertebra from staying in place.

Degenerative spondylolisthesis is caused by wear and tear of the joints in the spine and can be found among those with arthritis or at an older age. The traumatic form refers to high impact force to the spine, fracturing the neural arch surrounding the spinal cord, creating instability in the vertebra. Pathologic spondylolisthesis is caused by a weakness in the bones from a tumor, cancer, or bone disease. The last form is iatrogenic, which is caused by surgery where the spine was decompressed but not stabilized, allowing the vertebral body to slip.

Possible Chiropractic Treatments

Your chiropractor can devise a treatment plan based on your specific areas of pain or discomfort. Using a variety of techniques, this may involve spinal manipulation through physical or instrument-assisted adjustments.

If there is an area that needs focused attention, you may experience a treatment that includes trigger-point therapy, manual joint stretching and resistance, or instrument-assisted soft tissue therapy. All treatments performed by your chiropractor are done to reduce tension and improve spinal function.
