Dogs are often members of the family, which is why many people love to spoil their canine friends with foods and treats meant for humans. While this is usually not an issue, some foods that people regularly eat are toxic to dogs, requiring a trip to the veterinarian. Below are several of the most common items you shouldn't give to a dog.

What Foods Should Dogs Not Eat?

1. Avocados

This green fruit is delicious in salads and on sandwiches, and it contains a chemical compound known as persin. While this doesn't affect people, it can cause diarrhea and vomiting in dogs, and may even damage their heart muscles. The pit contains the highest concentration of this toxin and poses a choking hazard, so if your dog ingests one, take them to a veterinarian. If they have only consumed a small piece of avocado, monitor them for symptoms.

2. Grapes & Raisins

These healthy human snacks disrupt the function of dogs' kidneys. If you don’t keep grapes and raisins at home, make sure other items don't contain them. For example, trail mix, cookies, and snack bars often contain raisin paste or juice. While the exact reason for the toxicity is not known, even a few grapes can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

3. Macadamia Nuts

While peanut butter is an excellent source of protein for dogs, macadamia nuts are some of the most poisonous foods for dogs. After ingesting some, your dog may experience weakness, increased body temperature, tremors, and vomiting. Since these nuts are high in fat, the toxicity can even inflame your dog's pancreas, which requires immediate attention from a veterinarian.

4. Onions, Garlic, & Chives

If you love to let your dog taste your meal, avoid doing so if it contains these ingredients. They are part of the allium family, which is toxic. While garlic is the most dangerous, all of them can cause anemia, which is when the red blood cells can't transport enough oxygen to the body, leading to pale gums and an elevated heart rate. Symptoms after eating one of these items often don't appear for several days, so monitor your dog closely.

5. Raw Protein

Fish, meat, and eggs are all acceptable food choices for dogs, as long as you cook them fully. Raw or undercooked items can contain salmonella and E. coli, causing stomach issues. Additionally, raw eggs contain an enzyme that prevents dogs from absorbing biotin, which is what replenishes their skin and coat.
