Child care dropoffs can be difficult for both children and parents, especially if your child experiences separation anxiety. Fortunately, when you know what to do and what to avoid, you can ease your young one's nerves about going to their child care center. Here's what to know about dropping off your child for the day.

Do:

Stick with a routine.

Children often feel a sense of comfort and security when they engage in the same daily routines. You can build trust with your child and make them feel less anxious by having breakfast together every morning and discussing the day's itinerary.

Children who normally do not experience separation anxiety may suddenly feel nervous during dropoff as a result of changes in routine, such as a planned field trip or teacher going on leave. In this case, emphasizing the aspects that will remain the same, such as eating a delicious packed lunch or playing with friends at recess, may calm your child.

Give them something to remind them of you.

Children who become very attached to you may resist getting out of the car or letting go of your hand once you arrive at their child care center. You can make them feel better about leaving you for the day by giving them something to remind them of you.

For instance, you might pack a scarf or handkerchief that smells like your perfume or cologne into their backpack. Alternatively, you can provide them with a handmade bracelet and tell them that every time they look at it, you're sending them your love.

Don't:

Show your own anxiety.

Children who experience separation anxiety at dropoff may become even more nervous if they pick up on your own anxiety. Keeping a smile on your face and using a positive tone of voice can help them feel safe and show them there's nothing to fear.

They may even mimic the example you set, entering their child care center in good spirits and with a positive attitude.

Send confusing signals.

In an effort to prevent children from crying or throwing tantrums during dropoff, some parents opt to sneak away. However, this can send the wrong message to your young one, making them feel mistrustful and more fearful when you leave them at child care for the day.

Always tell your child goodbye before leaving, and give them a hug. Additionally, wish them a wonderful day, and let them know you'll be back very soon to pick them up.
