Dental implants are one of the most revolutionary treatments in modern medicine. By surgically implanting a small post in your jawbone, your dentist can now completely replace a missing tooth with a sturdy, healthy prosthetic. While the material for this procedure must be carefully selected to ensure your body will accept the implant, there are two possibilities currently available: titanium and zirconia.

Titanium

Most dental implants placed today are made of a titanium alloy. In the past, pure titanium was used, but it was softer than many implant specialists wanted, so other metals were added to harden it. Titanium is a biologically inert material, which means it doesn't react with the human body, making it an ideal implant material. However, there are some patients with allergies to other metals who prefer not to use a titanium alloy, and there are also those who simply have concerns about any metal at all in the body. For these patients, an alternative material is sometimes needed.

Zirconia

Dental ImplantsZirconia is a much newer dental implant material. It is considered a ceramic, although the component atoms are technically metals, and appears white and opaque, which makes it a more appealing alternative to many patients. Zirconia implants integrate with the jawbone in much the same way titanium ones do, making this a viable implant material. However, it has not been as thoroughly studied as titanium, so how they compare in the long term is not yet known.

If you're considering dental implants, ask your dentist which materials the practice offers. Both titanium and zirconia offer benefits, so make sure you're getting the choice that’s right for you.
