More than 40 states require specific drivers to maintain SR-22 insurance, and Ohio is one of them.  Some states refer to it as a certificate of financial responsibility. The requirement comes typically after a driver has had their license suspended, either for receiving multiple moving violations or for being caught driving without insurance. If you are unfamiliar with the SR-22, the information below will bring you up to speed.

An Introduction to SR-22 Insurance

What Is the SR-22?

The SR-22 is not insurance; sr-22 insuranceinstead, it is a bond that drivers must pay to their insurance agency in addition to their auto insurance policy. In return, the agency submits a form to the state's Motor Vehicle Bureau attesting that the driver has complied with the state's minimum required insurance coverage. In the case of Ohio, drivers must buy bodily injury liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident, as well as $25,000 of property damage liability. This coverage pays for repairs and medical and legal costs in case you should cause an accident that injures someone or damages their property.

Why Is SR-22 Insurance Required?

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires the SR-22 when they suspect a driver will forego auto insurance because of the cost—which skyrockets after a DUI or reckless driving conviction—or because they have been caught driving uninsured in the past. The insurance agency must then inform the state if the driver cancels the policy and—presumably—starts driving uninsured. Failure to comply with the SR-22 or a subsequent citation for driving without insurance can result in hefty fines and even revocation of driving privileges.
