It's exciting to see your favorite musician perform live. However, you need to protect your ears when at the event, as studies have found that the average sound level at a rock concert exceeds 100 decibels (dB). Here are some steps you can take to prevent noise-related hearing loss and enjoy the venue safely.

How to Protect Your Ears at a Concert

1. Wear Earplugs

Use a pair of silicone or foam earplugs, readily available at pharmacies, to minimize your exposure to the sound. If you attend concerts regularly, you might invest in a pair of custom-fit earplugs, usually made with soft silicone. They’re designed to safeguard your hearing without disturbing the quality of the sound.

2. Take Breaks

As sound levels approach 91 dB, the amount of time you can safely listen without risking hearing loss is approximately two hours. That time decreases as the sound level goes up, so any breaks you can fit into the concert will help.

Take a personal intermission and exit the auditorium once or twice during the show. Grab a snack or use the restroom while allowing your ears a break from the noise.

3. Avoid Speakers

While it may be exciting to be as close as possible to your favorite musical act, it can also increase your risk of hearing problems. If you’re seated near the speakers, the sound level nears 140 dB

Take note of how you feel between sets or at the intermission. If your ears are ringing, or you can’t hear well, move away from the stage.
