Hearing aids can be life-changing improvements, but they're also investments. Keeping them up to date and taken care of, especially when they begin to have problems, is key to ensuring the long life span of these great devices. Here is everything you need to do—and not do—when you have hearing aids.

Do:

Keep them in a dry container.

Since you put your hearing aids on in the morning, you might have them near your prescriptions in the bathroom or in a medicine cabinet. However convenient, hearing aids should not be placed in an area where humidity and moisture can build up. Try keeping them in a dry container by your bedside to protect them from any wetness.

Watch your battery life.

Check and make sure that your batteries are fully powered in the morning. Turn the devices off completely before bed and check if their battery life is draining more quickly than usual—this could signal that the batteries are old or are not charging properly. The battery is integral to the overall function of your hearing aid, so make sure it's up to date and ready to help you.

Keep them away from chemicals and products.

Things like hairspray, rubbing alcohol, and shaving cream will harm your hearing aids. When getting ready in the morning, consider keeping your hearing aids off until you are fully set to go.

Don't:

Place them in water.

You may be tempted to clean your hearing aids with water. However, water will only deteriorate the electronics. Wipe down your hearing aids with a dry cloth, being sure to use no other chemicals that may harm the device.

Leave them out of the container in the sun.

Besides humidity and moisture, heat is another factor that can damage hearing aids. If you are blowdrying or straightening your hair in the morning, be sure to leave them off and in their dry container. This goes for leaving them in direct sunlight, too. If you leave them in your car, be sure to put them in a cooler, covered compartment, like the glove box or trunk.

Lubricate them.

Do not apply any sort of lubrication or oil-based solution to your hearing aids. Once again, hearing aids work best in a dry environment. If they aren't fitting properly, take your hearing aids to a technician to get them refitted.
