A constantly running toilet isn't just irritating; it's also a waste of money. It can also be difficult to flush. When you can identify the reason for your running toilet, you can easily communicate the issue to a plumber, ensuring a fast fix. Here are three possible causes.

Why Is Your Toilet Running?

1. The Flush Valve's Flapper Seal Is Broken

The flush valve is made up of a flushing mechanism, overflow valve, and flapper seal. The flapper seal prevents water flow from the tank to the toilet bowl. Over time, it may become worn down and no longer provide a watertight seal. You can test this by adding a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank. If the water in the toilet bowl is also colored after a few minutes, the flapper seal is broken. A plumbing contractor can replace the part for you.

2. There's a Leak in the Fill Valve

The fill valve allows for a refill of water in the toilet tank after flushing. If the valve leaks, the toilet will run constantly. The valve may be activated by a lever-like float device or a vertical cylinder located inside the tank. To check if this is the issue, flush the toilet and lift the lever or cylinder while the tank refills. If the water fills the tank until it's flowing into the overflow valve, you have a leaky fill valve. This will need to be replaced by a pro.

3. The Fill Tube Is Leaking

The fill tube siphons water back into the toilet bowl after the toilet is flushed. If it's leaking, the bowl won't fill properly, and the toilet will run. Open the tank and check if the fill tube's end is above the water level, as it should be. If it's not, consult with a plumber as you may need a new one.
