Rain can seem fitting on the day of a funeral because of its symbolism. Some people find it represents melancholy and mourning, while others see it as a sign of renewal. Either way, you want family and guests to be comfortable if a storm comes. If you're planning a funeral, the day might not be very flexible, but there are several ways to prepare. Use the following tips if you’re concerned about the weather.

How to Deal With Rain at a Funeral

1. Send Out Reminders

Check the weather forecast at least a week before the event. If it’s looking like rain, send out reminders to people you’ve invited. For those active on social media, post in a group where you’ve been sharing funeral updates. Older guests may not be active on these sites, so call them to let them know about potential rain. Everyone then has plenty of time to pick up an umbrella or rain poncho and can change their attire if needed.

2. Bring Rain Gear for Others

Rain can strike unexpectedly. If inclement weather has been drifting in and out of the area, bring some rain gear just in case. Pick up large golf umbrellas that multiple people can huddle under. You can also hand out plastic shoe covers to protect footwear from getting soaked. The funeral home staff will be glad to store and hand these out for you, so discuss this ahead of time.

3. Ask About Temporary Shelters

Many funeral homes keep pop-up tents onsite for when inclement weather strikes, so speak with the director. If rain is a concern, they’ll pitch these around the burial site just in case. Let them know how many people you expect to attend so they can have enough temporary shelters set up.
