When a loved one passes, you may be involved in planning the funeral services. One way of honoring them is creating a video or slideshow of their life to show at the wake or funeral. Here are points to consider in preparing the presentation.

3 Tips When Making a Commemorative Video or Slideshow for Funeral Services

1. Check Format and Timing

Before you start working on the video, ask the funeral services director about the formats of slideshow presentations their equipment can accommodate. Find out how the audience will watch the presentation, such as on a TV screen or a computer connected to a projector. You also want to know how long the video should be in relation to the length of the funeral service.

2. Gather and Confirm Information

Gather the photos and video clips you want to include in your presentation, starting with your computer images and photo albums. Don't be shy about asking friends and family members for their photos, such as birthday or anniversary celebrations and family get-togethers.

Ensure you have the correct information about the people, locations, occasions, and dates to include in captions for the video presentation. Old photos often have a date or description on the back or in the margin of the image. If you borrow printed photos, return them as soon as possible in the same condition you received them.

3. Do a Practice Run

After you assemble the presentation, play the draft to make sure it runs according to plan. Ask the funeral director to allow you to do a practice run on their equipment.

Make a copy of the video as a backup and give it to the funeral director a day in advance of the funeral services. That way if a problem arises, or you forget to bring yours, the slideshow can still be presented.
