Hardwood flooring adds beauty to any room, in addition to being durable and low maintenance. If you’re planning on a new hardwood floor installation, it’s best to leave the installation to professionals to ensure a smooth and long-lasting floor. However, there are ways to prepare before installation to make sure that the flooring process goes well.

How to Prepare for Hardwood Installation

1. Control Dust

Sanding boards and installing flooring will leave the air filled with dust. To help avoid this, seal off any rooms that are not having floors installed. Do this with plastic sheets and painter’s tape. Additionally, install plastic sheets around the work area to help contain the dust.

Finally, tape up any ductwork in the rooms being floored. This will help keep the dust from circulating throughout the rest of the house.

2. Remove Baseboards or Molding

Removing the baseboards will give your flooring service company room to install the flooring as close to the wall as possible. If you’re looking to update the entire room style, this might be an opportunity to replace the baseboards as well.

3. Conduct a Moisture Test

Talk to your flooring company about a moisture test in the rooms being floored. Ensuring that the rooms are at the correct moisture level for hardwood will help to ensure that you have no mold or mildew issues down the line.

4. Prepare the Subfloor

If you have dips or imperfections in your subfloor, you can help prepare those areas before the installation of your new floor. Depending on the company installing your floors, they may have solutions that you can implement. Discuss any plans for the subfloor with them before you begin any work.
