3 Tips for Making Your iPad® Child-Friendly
The Apple® ecosystem offers a wealth of amazing games and educational apps perfect for young kids. However, you might also be worried about your children stumbling across inappropriate content online or accidentally spending hundreds on in-app purchases. If you’re thinking of picking up a used iPad® for your child, here are a few tips for keeping them and your bank account safe.
How to Keep an iPad Safe for Young Children
1. Wipe the Data
Whether you’re passing down your old device or buying a used iPad just for your kids, you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t contain any personal or financial information. Performing a factory reset is the best way to delete all of your settings and data.
To wipe the device, tap Settings and then General. Go to Reset and select Erase All Content and Settings.
2. Adjust the Restrictions
iOS® contains some powerful features that give parents a lot of control over what their kids are able to do on their devices. To limit the device, tap on Settings>General again, and this time select Restrictions.
First, set a new passcode so that your child can’t adjust settings themselves, then decide what your kids are allowed to do. Using these options, you can manage your child’s ability to make purchases, view certain types of content, and disable social media apps.
3. Turn On Airplane Mode
Older children will quickly learn how to restore connectivity, but turning on airplane mode keeps younger kids from using the internet unsupervised. If they want to play online games, they’ll have to ask you to turn the connection back on.
Hiding the Control Center, the panel that provides easy access to airplane mode, may keep them from accidentally stumbling across the setting. Just go to Settings, choose Control Center, and turn off the Access on Lock Screen and Access Within Apps options.
