Dental implants are an excellent treatment for individuals looking to restore their smile with a long-lasting solution. While this procedure may seem straightforward, there's a detailed process your dentist will complete to ensure you get the best results. Prepare for this treatment by learning about each step.

What Are the Steps for a Dental Implant Procedure?

1. Tooth Removal & Grafting

Before you can receive a dental implant, your dentist will need to extract the teeth that will be getting replaced. During this removal, your surgeon may also opt to perform bone grafting to create a stable area for the implant if you have significant defects in your jawbone.

2. Implant Placement

dental implantsAfter your bone grafting has healed, which can take anywhere from four to 12 months, you will be ready for implant placement. During this time, your dentist will insert a metal screw into your bone, which will later attach to the implant. This step of the procedure can take one to two hours, but you will be given anesthesia.

3. Install the Healing Abutment

After your implant placement has stabilized in the bone, your dentist will install an abutment, which will screw into the implant and support the false tooth. Your dentist may also take additional impressions once the abutment has been placed to ensure your permanent implants fit correctly.

4. Placing the Crown

Once the implant system has healed, your dentist will install the tooth, otherwise known as the crown. Depending on the dental implant you chose, this crown can either be cemented or screwed in. Both options provide durability, with results lasting anywhere from 10 to 20 years.
