As our economy continues to grow and cities expand, there is an increasing need for quality building materials. This is especially true in urban areas, where building upward, rather than sprawling out, is key. Limestone is one of the materials used for high-rise construction. But what is it exactly, and why is it so highly regarded?

A Guide to Limestone

What Is It?

Limestone, which is a commonly found sedimentary rock in the United States, is a type of carbonate rock formed with calcium carbonate. It most often forms in shallow water from the remains of marine life, such as coral, oysters, and clams.

How Is It Used?

LimestoneLimestone is used in the creation of Portland cement. Portland cement is one of the main ingredients in the formation of concrete, which is created by mixing it with water. The next time you’re in a Home Depot and see a bag of “Quikrete®,” note that “Portland cement” is the subheading on the bag.

In a crushed form, limestone is also used as part of the conglomerate that forms asphalt and is essential to its smoothness. For interior building materials, limestone is crucial in making marble slabs used in upscale kitchens and bathrooms.

Limestone has been used in architecture for centuries, especially in the Western hemisphere. Some of the world’s most famous structures were created from it, including Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza and the Megalithic Temples of Malta.
