Getting regular physical activity is important for people of all ages. However, it’s especially crucial to help children develop healthy exercise habits during their formative years. Encouraging them to engage in regular exercise will help them discover just how enjoyable it is and how much it can benefit them in the long run. This is also a good opportunity for parents to help children with their form and avoid sports injuries. Here are some tips to help them become more active.

How to Help Your Kids Enjoy Exercise

1. Practice What You Preach

Kids learn by watching what their parents do. When you show that you’re enthusiastic about working out on a regular basis, your kids will begin to see what makes it so enjoyable, especially when you extol the virtues of working out. You can tell them how much you enjoy playing tennis, for example, or explain to them the joys of participating in a match with a friend. By explaining the social benefits of exercising, your children may become excited about spending time with other kids and enjoying healthy competition.

2. Make It a Family Affair

Your little ones might feel uncertain about exercising, especially if they’re the only ones involved in the activity. To increase their confidence and excitement, make physical activity more of a group experience by encouraging the entire family to participate.

For example, your family can enjoy a walk in the park on a sunny morning or go for a bike ride together. If your child expresses interest in participating in a team sport like basketball or soccer, you may even want to volunteer to coach the team. This affords you some extra opportunities to watch your child’s progress, prevent sports injuries, and praise them for their hard work and dedication.

3. Keep Physical Activity Fun

Many adults stop working out because they don’t find it enjoyable. However, when they learn at a young age that exercising can actually be fun, people are usually more inclined to continue to seek out activities they enjoy. Make exercise enjoyable at this early age by encouraging regular time outside participating in all types of games and activities. Playing with the dog in the backyard, practicing volleyball in the pool, dancing around to their favorite music, and enjoying soccer competitions at the park with siblings or friends are all great ways to make physical activity a memorable and positive experience.
