If you wear dentures, it’s important to practice basic care and maintenance. Ask your dentist for advice on this matter. Having a professional demonstrate the right way to clean and maintain your artificial teeth will make it much easier to keep them in excellent condition for years.

Dentures Maintenance: What Your Dentist Wants You to Know

Clean After Eating

DenturesAfter meals, remove your dentures and rinse them gently in water. Maintain a firm grip, as they may break if you drop them. Consider putting a folded towel down near the sink so they have something soft to land on.

Brush Daily

Just like your teeth, you need to brush your dentures on a daily basis. However, you need to remove them before doing so. Dentures require a nonabrasive cleaning product, which is toxic and should be kept out of your mouth.

Soak Overnight

Unless your dentist specifies otherwise — there are some exceptions depending on the type you’re wearing — soak your false teeth overnight in denture solution. This keeps them moist and extends their life span. Just make sure you rinse them before putting them back in your mouth. Ideally, you should always rinse your dentures before reinserting them, but this is especially important after soaking them in solution.

Be Gentle

If you’re not careful, you run the risk of damaging the clasps on your dentures while cleaning them. Always handle them gently. If you have a caretaker or family member also responsible for cleaning your artificial teeth, make sure they know to be careful with them.

See Your Dentist

Schedule regular visits with your dentist to make sure your dentures are undamaged and still fit your mouth. Ask any questions you may have about proper maintenance.
