Joining a youth soccer league is a fantastic way to get your kids outside, active, and engaging with their friends and peers. However, as with any sport, soccer playing can result in injuries. Boys’ and girls’ soccer alike can be tough on the feet, ankles, and knees, so it pays to take a few precautionary measures to keep the risk of pain at a minimum. Whether your kids have soccer tryouts coming up or are readying themselves for a playoff game, take the time to go over a few easy tips to keep them safe on the field.

How to Stay Safe While Playing Youth Soccer

1. Stretch

Soccer requires fast moments and quick turns, which can lead to muscle strains and tears if you are not properly warmed up. Stretch before and after both practices and games to keep muscles loose and limber. Before you head into a game or scrimmage, stretch your ankles, calves, quads, and hamstrings. This is also a good time to gently stretch your back and neck to avoid whiplash during a fast-paced game.

2. Hydrate

Plus, it will keep your head and vision as clear and accurate as possible. This is especially important during hot summer days to avoid fatigue and fainting. Bring plenty of liquids to cool down with, including a few sports drinks packed with electrolytes to replenish fluids all day long.

3. Wear Proper Gear

Internal protection can only do so much to keep you safe from cleats and rogue balls. Your youth soccer league should have a list of the required gear that each player must wear on the field. Correctly sized cleats, shin guards, and knee braces (when applicable) should all be fitted and broken in ahead of game time to ensure total protection from cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
