Having a clean uniform is an important part of team sports. It can help players feel prepared and presentable for game day, and it also ensures their jerseys are visible for teammates. In youth soccer, uniforms are bound to get marred by grass and dirt stains. Here are some ways to keep them clean. 

How to Clean Youth Soccer Uniforms

1. Rinse Immediately

The sooner you’re able to rinse your player’s uniform, the less time stains will have to settle in. When you get home from a game, have your child give you their jersey for rinsing. Use your sink’s hose to eliminate surface mud. Then, rinse it in cold water to encourage additional dirt to make its way out. 

2. Choose the Right Products

To eliminate tough grass stains, use a heavy-duty detergent with stain lifting features. While you can use oxygen bleach to brighten the uniform, avoid using chlorine bleach, as it can strip color and fibers from polyester jerseys.

3. Pre-Soak

After rinsing away surface dirt, soak the uniform in a large sink or bucket with warm water. Add 2 tablespoons of your stain-fighting detergent and 1 cup of baking soda. While the detergent will keep the uniform looking its best, the baking soda will eliminate odors from sweat and dirt. Allow the uniform to soak for at least one hour, or overnight if possible.

4. Wash in Cold Water

Once the pre-soak is completed, it’s time to run the uniform in the washing machine. Avoid washing it with other laundry, as cottons may cling to the jersey’s numbers. Run a normal cycle but be sure to use cold water, as colors can run in hot water. 

5. Air Dry 

Since high temperatures can ruin screen printing, including the jersey’s letters and numbers, avoid putting the uniform in the dryer. Instead, hang the uniform to air dry. Keep it out of direct sunlight or any other heat sources.
