The flu is a seasonal virus that usually lasts about a week. While the symptoms can be tiring to manage, a medical prescription is not always necessary. However, if your symptoms become severe, it's a good idea to see a doctor. For mild and moderate flu cases, here are several tried and true home remedies that work to reduce the symptoms.

How to Treat Flu Symptoms

1. Sleep

Sleep is crucial to helping your body recover quickly. Resting also reduces your risk of flu-induced pneumonia. If you're having trouble sleeping, try taking a hot bath or shower before bed to relax your muscles and clear your sinuses. Getting a medical prescription for a decongestant, or an over-the-counter sleep aid can help you get the rest you need.

2. Add Humidity

Dry air can worsen symptoms like coughs, congestion, and headaches. Adding a humidifier to your room can help keep your mucous membranes healthy. A cool mist is preferable, as a warm mist can encourage mold and bacterial growth in your home. Keep the humidifier clean, and fill it with filtered water for maximum efficacy.

3. Utilize Saline

Saline, or salt water, is a great decongestant. Gargle with salt water to soothe a sore throat, and use saline nose drops to remove excess mucus from your sinuses. A good ratio is about 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 8 ounces of lukewarm water. Be sure to gargle no more than three times a day to avoid irritation.

4. Use OTC Medicines

If you have a fever or severe muscle aches, an over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen or naproxen might help. These are commonly available at your local pharmacy. Take them according to the manufacturer's instructions, and be sure not to exceed the maximum dose in a 24 hour period.

5. Consult Your Doctor

If you already have pre-existing health problems, see a doctor as soon as you develop flu symptoms. A doctor can write you a medical prescription for antiviral medication to keep the infection at bay. There are various kinds of antiviral drugs available, and they work best when taken within 48 hours of the first flu symptoms. Your doctor will choose the one that works best for you.
