Face masks are one of the most effective tools in preventing the spread of COVID-19. When properly worn, a face mask from your local pharmacy will reduce the risk of spread by around 70% to 80%, protecting both yourself and others. Make the most of this protective measure by ensuring you are wearing the mask properly.

How to Wear a Face Mask

1. Cover Your Nose

The virus spreads through both large and fine droplets that exit your nose and mouth when you speak, sneeze, cough, breathe, and more. Just covering your mouth is not enough. The nose should be fully covered to prevent the spread of germs.

2. Clean It

The mask is rendered inefficient by any holes, which will allow droplets out of it. Any rips, tears, or worn elastic means it's time to stop by your pharmacy for a replacement.

When you remove a disposable mask, place it immediately in the trash without putting it down on any other surfaces first. This would contaminate the surface. Reusable masks should be washed between each wear. Place the dirty mask in a plastic bag until you are able to wash it. Cloth masks or bandanas can go into the washing machine with your normal laundry.

3. Wash Your Hands

You touch a lot of surfaces during the day, and if one of those surfaces is contaminated, you do not want to expose it to your face. Putting your mask on and taking it off requires contact with your face, so your hands should be clean. Always wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before doing this.

4. Toss Disposable Masks

The disposable paper masks from the pharmacy are effective and comfortable, but they should only be worn once. They are not designed for continued use. When you take them off, they should go directly in the trash. If you want to wear a mask more than once, use a cloth one.
