3 Possible Reasons Your Computer Keeps Freezing
By RadioActive
A frozen computer can be frustrating, making even simple tasks impossible and preventing you from accessing important data. Freezing may be a sign of any number of issues, some minor and easily fixable and others requiring professional computer repairs. Here are three of the more common issues that can freeze a computer.
What Causes a Frozen Computer?
1. Running Too Many Apps
Every application your computer uses demands a certain amount of memory. Running too many apps at the same time can deplete memory stores and cause the system to freeze. Further complicating the issue is that many apps run in the background, which means you may not even realize the extent of the memory usage occurring. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to access the task manager and see what apps are running. Remove those you don't need or use regularly and see if that remedies the freezing.
2. Overheating
When a computer overheats, the CPU has a built-in protection system that prevents any more processing until the unit cools down. This results in a frozen computer. Overheating can have many different causes, including blocked air vents, broken fans, viruses, and too many applications, processes, or browser tabs open at the same time. If your computer feels hot to the touch or you hear unusual noises like squealing when the system tries to start, overheating may be the reason, and professional computer repairs should be a priority.
3. Misconfiguring Hardware
Misconfigured hardware is likely the issue if you have recently installed a new component like a mouse, keyboard, or sound or memory card. The component may not be compatible with your computer, and this can drain the device of its resources and cause it to freeze. Try removing the new component and see if that restores the functionality of your computer. A computer repair professional can advise you on appropriate replacement hardware for your system.
