A car’s steering system is intricately designed to give drivers command over which direction the wheels turn in. Without it, you wouldn’t have the ability to maneuver a large and heavy vehicle with such precision. Thus, it’s essential for this component of your car to remain in prime condition to ensure smooth handling and maximum control while navigating the roads. Below is an overview of how the steering system works and why it goes hand-in-hand with proper auto alignment to provide you with a safe driving experience.

Rack-and-Pinion Steering

The majority of modern vehicles are built with a rack-and-pinion steering system. This consists of a round gear, known as a pinion, that’s attached to the base of the steering column where it aligns with a notched rod called a rack. The rack connects to the car’s left and right wheels, and as the steering wheel is turned, the pinion helps shift the rack into the right position for the wheels to move accordingly. Despite the simple mechanism, it allows for highly accurate steering.

Steering-Box

It’s constructed like a threaded cylinder with gear teeth on the exterior and a hole that allows a rod to screw in at one end. The other end of the rod connects to the steering wheel. When the steering wheel is rotated, it also rotates the rod and the cylinder it’s screwed into. The gear teeth will then move the wheels in the same direction the cylinder is turning as guided by the steering wheel.

Power Steering

Many cars these days also have power-assisted steering installed. These are hydraulic systems that send fluid under high pressure to the rack or steering box. A pump located in the engine is used to pump this fluid out. The result is more responsive steering, making it easier to maneuver and park the vehicle, even in tight spaces.

Steering & Auto Alignment

Another essential aspect of steering is an auto alignment. Even if all the components of a steering system are in working order, a car must be correctly aligned to keep the wheels driving straight and smooth. If the alignment is off, the response to the steering system will be inaccurate. This can happen from hitting a curb, running over potholes, or getting into an accident.
