HERE COME THE MILLENIALS

Millennials are a unique group and there have been plenty of negative things written about them.  However, like them or hate them, in less than 10 years they will comprise 75% of the work force.  So how should companies start planning their human resources procedures to add Millennials at their company?

First of all companies need to change the way they recruit.  Millennials tend not to look at job posting boards or submit their resumes to professional recruiting firms.  Therefore, the onus is on the recruiter to search for them on sites such as Linked In based on degrees and skills and then reach out to them.  They also are most likely to research a company on social media sites and are more interested in a company’s culture and values that its product line.  Communications, including interviews, will need to be more timely as Millennials expect quicker responses and will prefer texting and skyping over more traditional methods.

Once you hire a Millennial you will need to have the right human resources strategy to make them productive and retain them.  They embrace change, like a fast paced work environment where they can contribute their ideas and receive frequent feedback.  Traditional organizations with formal structures, lines of communications and annual performance reviews just won’t work with them.  They are motivated by a job that is a reflection of their identity rather than a way to pay their bills.  Companies will have to change the way they operate from a human resources perspective or face the consequences: high turnover and an unhappy and unproductive work force.
