When you want a delicious selection of appetizers for guests, but you want to serve it in a way that's both upscale and rustic, charcuterie boards are the answer you have been looking for. Like many appetizers and party trays, charcuterie boards are completely customizable and easy to assemble at home, if you know the tricks of the trade. Here is a little more information about how to make a charcuterie board.

3 Tips for Creating a Charcuterie Board

1. Consider the Party's Size

The first step in creating a memorable charcuterie board is thinking carefully about your event. Consider the number of guests you will have, and whether or not you are serving any other meals during the party. If the party tray will only be out for a short time, don't create an oversized arrangement of food.

Instead, use a catering calculator to determine how many appetizers you need for the size of your event, and make sure you get enough food that your guests could compile on their plates throughout the event. For instance, if you are having four friends over, and the appetizer portion of your event will be about an hour long, you should plan on using a board that would fit enough food to compile about 20 small appetizers.

2. Gather the Best Foods

Quality is everything when it comes to party trays and charcuterie boards. Oftentimes, people select a variety of high-end meats, cheeses, fruits, and crackers for savory charcuterie boards. Work with your local deli to order pre-sliced meats and cheeses, and try to include special items people may not purchase regularly. For instance, fresh figs or toasted rosemary crackers could be a fun addition and an interesting functional decoration to your board.

3. Arrange the Foods Neatly

Select a large wooden cutting board, and clean it carefully. Arrange crackers, meats, and cheeses in an artistic way on the tray, with ingredients being grouped together based on what goes together. For instance, if you are serving Hawaiian-roasted pork on sweet rolls with toasted pineapple, have those three elements near one another on the party tray.

You can use ramekins and small dishes to separate ingredients that may be wet or messy. Keep the tray neat and clean as you work, and cover it with plastic when you are finished. Store the tray in your refrigerator until the day of your event, unless everything on the party tray is non-perishable.
