Warm weather makes spring the ideal time to go on scenic drives. However, rain and slippery conditions are common during this time of year. Before taking that first trip, you need to ensure your vehicle is in top shape and can handle all types of weather. Checking items such as windshields and tires will help you and others stay safe while enjoying the road.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle for Spring Driving

1. Clean Windshield & Check Wipers

Driving in winter weather takes its toll on windshields and wipers.  Snow, icy rain, and salt spray from the road may have accumulated on your vehicle during the colder months. Cleaning your front and rear windshields with a high-quality window washing solution helps your wipers operate at peak performance and improves visibility by getting rid of oily film buildup.

Remove film from the interior glass to avoid moisture that can accumulate and interfere with your view. Check the wiper blades for worn or torn rubber that can keep them from operating smoothly and replace them if necessary.

2. Examine Tires

Examine your tires closely for worn tread, which increases the risk of sliding on slick roads during spring rain. Sand and salt residue on the pavement also interfere with traction. To check your tread, insert a quarter between the spaces, with Washington's head pointing downward. If the top of the head is covered, the tread is sufficient.

Repeat the test at several places on each tire, and if the tread is low anywhere, replace the tire. Use a tire pressure gauge to check each tire for proper inflation, and add air if necessary to meet the manufacturer's specification.

3. Watch Out for Potholes

In spring, potholes are formed because water freezes and melts, expanding cracks in the roadway during winter. Snowplows and anti-freezing agents also damage the pavement. If you must drive over a pothole, protect your tires by slowing down as you approach it and releasing the brakes immediately before passing over it.
