Whether you’ve only started playing tennis or have been on the courts for a few years, improving your forehand shot is worthwhile. It’s a foundational move that involves a sweeping motion that starts on the side of your body with your dominant hand and ends at the opposite shoulder. How to Refine the Tennis Forehand

1. Different Grips

There are four variations on the tennis forehand—the Western, Semi-Western, Continental, and Eastern—each defined by a different type of grip. They all have their benefits: the first two are ideal for when you want the ball to bounce high, while the Continental tends to lead to a low bounce. As for the Eastern, it’s excellent for flat shots, when you’re aiming for a straight path. Learn and explore each one to see which feels most comfortable and most suitable for you. 

2. Body Twist

 

A forehand shot should always involve twisting the body. As you swing your arm from one side to the other, you should also be rotating your body from the hips. Your non-dominant foot should be in front and placed firmly on the ground, while the opposite foot should be positioned slightly further back. 

When you swing, the movement should lift the heel of the back foot. If it doesn’t go up, you’re not rotating from the hips enough or at all. This twisting motion will give you the power you need to execute a strong forehand. 

3. Strong, Sturdy Follow-Through

Another reason to rotate from the hips is for a strong follow-through. Your forehand should end with the racket fully over the opposite shoulder, at about a 45° angle. If it’s in front of your chest, it’s not strong enough. Alternatively, rotating from the hips can generate too much energy and cause you to swing too widely; you may even get a little off-balance. Practice keeping the movement strong, but contained.
