A pet is a joy in your life, though you should also be aware of their effect on residential HVAC systems, from clogged air filters, to clogged coils, to chewed wires. Here's what you should know to avoid problems and call an HVAC contractor when needed.

The Effects of Pets on Residential HVAC Systems

Pet fur and the allergens, dirt, and dust it can carry can affect both your residential HVAC and the air you breathe. All cats and dogs, even those that are hypoallergenic, shed fur and dander, which gets into the HVAC ducts and can clog filters and vents. When your pet plays outdoors, they can bring in pollen, dust, and dirt that ends up in the air, on your furniture and carpets, and in the HVAC.

HVAC systems can experience other pet-related problems. Dogs tend to mark their territory, and if they urinate on the outdoor condenser unit, the coils may deteriorate faster. Pets may also chew on the wiring or dig around the unit, which can both damage the HVAC and injure the animals.

How to Keep Your HVAC Running Smoothly

Bathe and brush your pet regularly to keep the HVAC system clear of excess debris. Vacuum floors and furniture at least once a week to clean up hair that could find its way into the vents.

A clogged filter decreases airflow, causing the unit to work harder than necessary and eventually leading to premature failure, so change the air filter every 30–60 days. Also, schedule annual tuneups and inspections with a professional HVAC contractor to catch minor issues before they become more extensive, costly problems.

Outdoors, keep your pets away from the condenser unit. Install a small fence around it if necessary to keep dogs from marking on it. Keep an eye on wires and connections, and call an HVAC contractor for repairs if anything is loose or exposed.
