When it’s hot and humid outside, you rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool inside. Unfortunately, warm air coming out of the vents is a common problem. With proper AC maintenance, your system can often be restored to optimal performance, though you’ll want to figure out what’s causing this to happen so you can prevent it in the future. If you’ve already checked that the thermostat isn’t set to heat, here are a few other reasons why your AC may be blowing hot air.

What Causes Air Conditioners to Put Out Warm Air?

1. Low Refrigerant

Air conditioners use refrigerant to absorb heat from indoor air and provide cooling power. Over time, normal wear and tear or damage to your system can cause a leak that reduces refrigerant levels. Without an adequate amount, your AC won’t be able to cycle through the evaporation process that creates cold air.

An HVAC contractor can identify the source of a leak and complete the necessary repair before adding more refrigerant to recharge the system. Checking refrigerant levels is an essential AC maintenance task performed at every annual tuneup as well.

2. Dirty Evaporator Coil

AC maintenanceThe evaporator coils located within your indoor air conditioning unit can collect dirt and dust from the air being sucked inside. If they aren’t cleaned off periodically, the buildup will start to interfere with your system’s ability to distribute cool air.

Your HVAC technician will have the proper tools to remove buildup. Coils can also become dirty due to a clogged filter, so replace or clean it every one to three months as part of your AC maintenance plan.

3. Electrical Problem

Many air conditioning systems consist of a condensing unit outside and an air handler inside. If the power gets switched off or the connection to the condenser comes loose, the indoor fan will continue to run, but the system won’t cool down the air. As a result, you’ll only get hot air flowing through your home.

Checking the circuit breaker and the connection may be all you need to do to fix the issue. However, if power is continually lost, you’ll need an HVAC contractor to determine if there’s a more serious electrical issue.
