Roofs are vulnerable to extensive damage from rain, snow, or ice storms. No matter your roof's age or condition, it's wise to take precautions to avoid storm damage. If a storm has already passed through your area and it's too late to protect your roof, look for these signs that indicate your residential roofing sustained storm damage.

4 Indicators of Roof Storm Damage

1. Granule Loss

Granule loss is only a concern with shingle roofs. Shingles are coated with a fine layer of crushed rock granules for added protection against the elements. However, if your shingles get battered by high winds or pelted with hail, the granules can come off. You may find these granules in your yard, on your sidewalk, or inside of your gutters as they fall from the roof. The damage often occurs in telltale horizontal lines, and the fix may involve getting new shingles to replace ones that have lost their protective layer.

2. Water Infiltration

If water seeps into your home through your ceiling during or after a storm, your roof has undoubtedly been compromised. Water infiltration can happen due to holes, cracks, or damaged flashing that prevents your roof from repelling water. High winds commonly cause this type of damage as the air forcefully rips off shingles and tears off the underlayment. You'll need a roofer to evaluate the leaking areas and patch and repair the damage.

3. Broken Shingles

Severe storms can break, crack, or detach shingles entirely from your roof. Without shingles, your underlayment is exposed and your roof is highly susceptible to water damage. Therefore, you should call a residential roofing specialist immediately after a storm if you're missing shingles so that they can assess the damage and recommend repairs.

4. Damage to Supports

Homeowners should check their interior roof supports following a storm to ensure that the beams are intact and don't show any signs of water damage, mold, or mildew. Usually, you can access and visually inspect these supports by going into your attic.
