Root canal therapy is an often-misunderstood dental treatment. Many patients avoid it because of myths, which can actually lead to greater discomfort and more serious oral health issues. If you suspect you need this treatment, know that it’s essential and much simpler than it may seem. Here is a helpful guide to ease any concerns.

Why Are They Necessary?

Inside each tooth is a series of chambers called root canals. They house nerve tissue and blood vessels that keep your teeth alive. When decay-causing bacteria form a cavity and break into these root chambers, they cause a severe infection and, often, pain. Eventually, the inflammation kills the tooth, and it becomes brittle, discolored, and at risk of breaking. Root canal therapy is designed to eliminate this infection and save what’s left of the tooth.

What Is the Procedure Like?

Root canal therapy is an outpatient procedure and can take as little as 30 minutes to complete. The dentist will first numb the area around the infected tooth, so you don’t feel any pain. They then enter the root chamber through the tooth’s crown and will remove infected pulp and tissue. They then clean the area to remove decay-causing bacteria and fill the root chambers with dental cement to prevent future infection.

After, they apply a temporary metal cap to the tooth to keep bacteria out and strengthen it. Over several weeks, they’ll take a mold of your mouth and craft a custom-fit cap, also called a crown, that fits over the tooth. This protective crown ensures the tooth doesn’t need to be extracted and can still be used to help chew and hold other teeth in place.
