Bowling is a pastime everyone can participate in–making it the perfect activity for families to enjoy together. Teaching your child to bowl not only helps them learn a new hobby but allows them to see how their skills can develop over time. Encourage your child to hit the lanes by utilizing the following bowling tips.

How to Teach Your Child to Bowl

1. Start Them Early

Introducing bowling to your child at an early age enables them to understand the game and hone their skills. Most children above the ages of 3can begin to participate in bowling–just make sure to use a light enough bowling ball for them to comfortably hold. Use bumpers and ramps to show them how to knock down pins and build their confidence.

2. Make It Fun

Proper form becomes a vital factor down the road, but in the beginning, it’s more important to help your children have fun while learning a new hobby. Teach your children the concept of the game and challenge them to knock down as many pins as they can to start. Once they are comfortable rolling the ball, remove the bumpers and let them move onto the next level.

3. Encourage the Basics

Once your child is old enough to support the weight of the ball on their own, teach them to start with it at their waist. From here, you can show them how to swing the ball back and where to release it. You can also talk to them about how far back to stand and where to shift when trying to knock down certain pins.

4. Make the Time

When teaching your child something new, it’s important to remember they can become bored if you spend too much time in one session. Try reserving a lane for an hour a few times a week to get into a fun but educational routine. Not only will they look forward to their weekly bowling breaks, but they’ll also continue to improve their skills.
