Bowling can be a competitive sport or a fun, casual night out with friends. You don’t need advanced skills to enjoy a night at the lanes, but everyone should follow the proper etiquette at the bowling alley. Here are some tips to help ensure you and others enjoy the experience.

Do:

Understand the right of way.

If two bowlers in side-by-side lanes are ready to bowl at the same time, the person on the right goes first. It’s a simple courtesy that ensures bowlers do not disrupt one another.

Return equipment to the proper place.

If you are renting equipment or using balls belonging to the lane, treating it with care and ensuring it gets back to where it belongs is a courtesy to your fellow bowlers. It also helps the bowling alley run smoothly. Meanwhile, you benefit by having a clean, efficient alley to enjoy.

Wear the right footwear.

There is a reason bowling alleys offer shoe rentals. Wearing proper shoes will help you perform better and avoid injuries, and they help protect the lanes. Never wear your normal footwear when bowling.

Don’t:

Disrupt other bowlers.

Bowling is a social game and it’s important to have fun, but it’s just as important to remember that you are not the only one at the alley. Chat, celebrate, and enjoy time with your friends, but avoid being so loud that it intrudes on others. Show courtesy to other groups and help keep your favorite alley a place where everyone can enjoy themselves.

Bring food onto the lanes.

Food and drink are part of enjoying good times with your friends, but remember that neither belongs on or near the lanes. This isn’t merely a matter of cleanliness, either. It’s also a safety issue, as food and drink spilled near the lanes can cause injuries.

Hold up the game.

Taking bathroom breaks when it’s your turn, lingering before or after your shot, and otherwise taking a long time to play doesn’t just slow you down, it delays your entire group. This can also back up other groups waiting for your lanes. Enjoy your time at the bowling alley, but respect the time of others, too.
