In addition to their elegant design and a multitude of apps, Apple® products also have a high level of security. Compared to other brands, they’re not as susceptible to catching malware or getting hacked. However, just because it’s improbable doesn’t mean it’s impossible, especially if you’re frequently browsing the internet. Whether you use a MacBook®, iMac®, or iPad®, here are a few do’s and don’ts to follow to protect your device.

Do:

Install anti-virus software.

The easiest and most efficient way to defend Apple products is with anti-virus software. They’ll run in the background and regularly scan the hard drive for risks and remove them accordingly. Every month or so, you should also do a deep scan to clean out potential problems thoroughly.

Use complex passwords.

While an anti-virus program helps prevent something from infecting your hard drive, a secure password is critical for protecting your online accounts. With so many programs and apps operating on the cloud, you need to use complicated passwords. Stick with words or names that aren’t directly related to you; if you’ve mentioned it in social media, it doesn’t belong in your password. Don’t forget to incorporate capital letters and numbers for added protection.

Don’t:

Click suspicious email links.

Apple productsWhether it’s a link to a website or an attachment, if you’re unsure about the destination or the sender’s motivations, leave it alone or take some time to do some research. You can usually hover over the link and see the URL in the bottom bar of your browser. If the URL looks like a legitimate website, the link is probably not malicious.

Fill up the hard drive.

Although it’s not directly related to internet security, having a hard drive that’s filled hinders functionality. You won’t be able to download updates, apps will get sluggish, and your computer will freeze up more often. This also means your anti-virus software won’t run as efficiently as before. If you want to catch the threats as quickly as possible, leave at least 15% of the hard drive empty.
