Basement walls are made to remain straight, providing the necessary support and ensuring that the structure is stable. However, issues can develop that cause them to bow inward ever slightly, with cracks of varying sizes developing along the curve. Understanding why this occurs is the easiest way to secure foundation repair before an accidental collapse, so take a closer look at the following.

Why Do Basement Walls Bow?

One of the reasons why your basement walls are bowing is likely because the groundwater levels are rising. Heavy rains and melting snow can cause this to occur, flooding the soil and pressing up against the sides of the foundation.

Another possibility is that the ground is frozen. As the water begins to harden, it expands in an outward direction and will push in the basement walls. Heavy equipment could also have an effect, compacting the nearby soil until it causes the foundation to crack.

How Can I Fix This?

An effective approach for foundation repair is to use wall braces. Several options are available, including carbon fiber straps, wall plate anchors and steel beams. Carbon fiber straps are set vertically and spaced every four feet along the inside of the wall. They adhere with the help of epoxy and limit the movement of the material.

Wall plate anchors feature a set of large metal plates that fasten to the inside of the basement wall. Steel rods are then placed horizontally along the exterior, extending approximately 10 feet out from the house and securing into the ground.

Another option is a series of steel beams that mount directly to the floor. These reinforced pieces of material will sit at the edge of the wall that’s beginning to bow and provide additional support, which could lower the risk of movement.
