Hawaii's warm weather and humidity provide a comfortable environment to live in. Unfortunately, humans aren't the only ones enjoying the climate. Termites can be found throughout the islands and can damage your property. The following guide explains more about these creatures to help you understand them and take preventive measures.

Types & Appearance

Subterranean, dry-wood, and damp-wood termites can all be found in Hawaii, with the latter being the most common. Formosan species are also active on the islands and often don't leave proof of their presence. Because their colonies can grow up to 10 million bugs, they are one of the most destructive underground types.

These pests range in color from pale cream to brown to black, with two pinchers and a clear divide between their head and body. The head-to-body ratio will reveal the type. For example, Formosan termites have a long body, short, oval head, and short pincers.

Common Signs

The biggest indicator of an infestation is wood damage. Termites thrive on the cellulose abundant in the material, so they will eat through any wood they can find—whether it's in the foundation, walls, or furniture. Any structure with water damage is particularly appealing to them as it makes the item easier to chew.

Subterranean termites will also leave mud tubes leading from the outdoors to your home. These passageways are thick as a pencil and function as a tunnel, where they move from their underground home to your property. In contrast, dry-wood termites will leave tiny pellets of fecal matter, known as frass, around their feeding areas. These are very small, about 1mm, and vary in color.

Termite Treatments

If you suspect termites are in your home, a pest control professional can determine whether there's an infestation and find the colony's location to eliminate them. Whether you need spot treatment or fumigation depends on how many are present.

Because humidity is prevalent in Hawaii, seal up or paint any bare wood to keep it dry so that it's less of an attractive food source for these pests. Also, move any plants or landscaping debris away from the exterior of your home. If there's a storm and damp vegetation is nearby, termites might use these areas for shelter.

Home improvements will also help, such as sealing any cracks in the foundation or walls to make it more difficult for them to enter your home. Additionally, fixing plumbing issues can prevent water damage, such as leaks that deteriorate the walls.
