Wisdom teeth normally erupt in early adulthood, and often need to be removed because they crowd the other teeth and cause shifting and discomfort. Your dentist can determine whether you require wisdom tooth removal and provide specific instructions for your care, but here are some recovery tips to keep in mind if you’re anticipating this procedure.

Steps to Take After Having Wisdom Teeth Removed

1. Manage Pain

Wisdom tooth removal can cause pain at the incision and around the jaw, so follow your oral surgeon’s guidance when taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medication. You can also hold an ice pack to your jaw periodically throughout the day to reduce blood flow and swelling to the area. If your jaw feels tight from being held open during the procedure, gently massage your facial muscles to reduce tension.

2. Stay Hydrated

Hydration and nutrition help your cells recover from damage. However, be gentle on your mouth following surgery to prevent pain and allow blood clots to form over the incision. Sip liquids carefully, and avoid straws, since this causes your cheeks to move inward toward the incision. When eating, choose soft foods like soup and mashed potatoes.

3. Clean Your Mouth Gently

Begin your regular brushing routine about 24 hours after surgery to keep your mouth clean. However, avoid brushing right next to the incision to allow blood clots to form. Instead, carefully rinse your mouth with salt water after meals to clean and remove food particles.

4. Rest

Wisdom tooth removal involves sedation, so it’s not safe to drive yourself home or resume normal activities within 24 hours. Get plenty of rest and keep your head elevated to prevent swelling. After a day or two, with clearance from your oral surgeon, you may resume some normal activity, but avoid strenuous exercise or anything that could impact the incision site for at least a few days.
